Tertiary education at Ballarat began with the establishment of the School of Mines and Industries since 1870 making it Australia's third oldest tertiary institution. The University is accredited by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, Australia. UB scores FIVE STARS for teaching quality in the 2010 Good Universities Guide, Australia. In the year 2009, UB had around 26,000 students including 4,300 Indian students.
